"As a son would have saved us from misfortune — so save then the kinsmen. For terrible is your strength of weapons, and unsurpassable your sorcery, you who fight unceasingly in the fray, o delight of Bhima. Be the saving shore for the broken Pandavas, drowning amid the host of Dhritarashtra's sons under Karna's sharpened arrows, o scorcher of foes. For at night the rakshasas grow all the more measureless in valor; slay Karna, the great archer, at midnight by sorcery in battle. The Parthas will slay Drona, with Dhrishtadyumna at their head."

"Be the saving shore for the drowning" — Krishna reveals to Ghatotkacha his highest calling: to become the salvation of the perishing. It is telling that the rakshasa, whose strength grows by night, is entrusted with the work of the night — each has his own instrument and his own hour. The verse teaches that the wise one directs each person to where his nature is strongest; and Ghatotkacha, terrible in the night, is sent forth at midnight — for true guidance places a person where his gift turns to good.
