घटोत्कच उवाच
अलम् एवास्मि कर्णाय द्रोणायालं च सत्तम ॥
अन्येषां क्षत्रियाणां च कृतास्त्राणां महात्मनाम् ॥
अद्य दास्यामि संग्रामं सूतपुत्राय तं निशि ॥
यं जनाः संप्रवक्ष्यन्ति यावद् भूमिर् धरिष्यति ॥
न चात्र शूरान् मोक्ष्यामि न भीतान् न कृताञ्जलीन् ॥
सर्वान् एव वधिष्यामि राक्षसं धर्मम् आस्थितः ॥

alam evāsmi karṇāya droṇāyālaṃ ca sattama ||
anyeṣāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ ca kṛtāstrāṇāṃ mahātmanām ||
adya dāsyāmi saṃgrāmaṃ sūtaputrāya taṃ niśi ||
yaṃ janāḥ saṃpravakṣyanti yāvad bhūmir dhariṣyati ||
na cātra śūrān mokṣyāmi na bhītān na kṛtāñjalīn ||
sarvān eva vadhiṣyāmi rākṣasaṃ dharmam āsthitaḥ ||
"I am a match for Karna, and a match for Drona too, o best of men, and for other kshatriyas, skilled in weapons and great of soul. Today I will give battle to the son of a suta — in the night, a battle of which people will tell as long as the earth endures. And I will not spare the brave here, neither the frightened nor those pleading with joined palms; all of them I will slay, having taken my stand in the law of the rakshasa."

Ghatotkacha promises a battle that will be remembered "as long as the earth endures," yet at once reveals his nature: he will spare neither the brave nor the pleading. It is telling that he names this outright as "the law of the rakshasa" — a dharma other than the kshatriya's, which spares those who surrender. The verse teaches that every being has its own law, consonant with its nature; and Ghatotkacha is honest in his ruthlessness — but this honest ferocity only sets off how different, how more merciful, is the path of dharma among the noble.
