It is worth noting the phrase vikṛtatvena bhāsate, "appears as modified." Vikṛti means "change, transformation"; and it is said that brahman seems modified, without being modified. This is vivarta, "apparent transformation," discussed when reading the Varāha (3.7) and the Kṛṣṇa-upaniṣad (2.4); and here it is stated in its pure form.
Let us repeat briefly the distinction of the two teachings, for it belongs here. Vivarta-vāda: milk seems to become curd; in fact it is milk. Pariṇāma-vāda: milk becomes curd; and the curd is real.
The Vaiṣṇava side holds a third, discussed there too and called śakti-pariṇāma-vāda: it is not He who is transformed, but His power. That is, He is unchanging, as the first school holds; and the world is real, as the second holds. Her usual comparison is this: the spider and its web.
The spider emits a thread from itself, and the thread is real; but the spider itself does not diminish or turn into web thereby. This comparison stands in the Muṇḍaka (1.1.7): yathorṇa-nābhiḥ sṛjate gṛhṇate ca, "as a spider emits and draws in." Read this way, the present verse is not rejected but corrected in one word: what appears modified is not brahman, but His power; and so "seems" here is superfluous.
