सुरासुरैर् अवध्यांस् तान् अहं ज्ञात्वा ततः प्रभो ॥
अब्रुवं मातलिं हृष्टो याह्य् एतत् पुरम् अञ्जसा ॥
त्रिदशेशद्विषो यावत् क्षयम् अस्त्रैर् नयाम्य् अहम् ॥
न कथं चिद् धि मे पापा न वध्या ये सुरद्विषः ॥
उवाह मां ततः शीघ्रं हिरण्यपुरम् अन्तिकात् ॥
रथेन तेन दिव्येन हरियुक्तेन मातलिः ॥
ते माम् आलक्ष्य दैतेया विचित्राभरणाम्बराः ॥
समुत्पेतुर् महावेगा रथान् आस्थाय दंशिताः ॥
ततो नालीकनाराचैर् भल्लशक्त्यृष्टितोमरैः ॥
अभ्यघ्नन् दानवेन्द्रा मां क्रुद्धास् तीव्रपराक्रमाः ॥
तद् अहं चास्त्रवर्षेण महता प्रत्यवारयम् ॥
शस्त्रवर्षं महद् राजन् विद्याबलम् उपाश्रितः ॥
व्यामोहयं च तान् सर्वान् रथमार्गैश् चरन् रणे ॥
ते ऽन्योन्यम् अभिसंमूढाः पातयन्ति स्म दानवाः ॥
तेषाम् अहं विमूढानाम् अन्योन्यम् अभिधावताम् ॥
शिरांसि विशिखैर् दीप्तैर् व्यहरं शतसंघशः ॥
ते वध्यमाना दैतेयाः पुरम् आस्थाय तत् पुनः ॥
खम् उत्पेतुः सनगरा मायाम् आस्थाय दानवीम् ॥
ततो ऽहं शरवर्षेण महता प्रत्यवारयम् ॥
मार्गम् आवृत्य दैत्यानां गतिं चैषाम् अवारयम् ॥
तत् पुरं खचरं दिव्यं कामगं दिव्यवर्चसम् ॥
दैतेयैर् वरदानेन धार्यते स्म यथासुखम् ॥
अन्तर्भूमौ निपतितं पुनर् ऊर्ध्वं प्रतिष्ठते ॥
पुनस् तिर्यक् प्रयात्य् आशु पुनर् अप्सु निमज्जति ॥
अमरावतिसंकाशं पुरं कामगमं तु तत् ॥
अहम् अस्त्रैर् बहुविधैः प्रत्यगृह्णं नराधिप ॥
ततो ऽहं शरजालेन दिव्यास्त्रमुदितेन च ॥
न्यगृह्णं सह दैतेयैस् तत् पुरं भरतर्षभ ॥
विक्षतं चायसैर् बाणैर् मत्प्रयुक्तैर् अजिह्मगैः ॥
महीम् अभ्यपतद् राजन् प्रभग्नं पुरम् आसुरम् ॥

rathena tena divyena hariyuktena mātaliḥ ||

tato nālīkanārācair bhallaśaktyṛṣṭitomaraiḥ ||
abhyaghnan dānavendrā māṃ kruddhās tīvraparākramāḥ ||
tad ahaṃ cāstravarṣeṇa mahatā pratyavārayam ||
śastravarṣaṃ mahad rājan vidyābalam upāśritaḥ ||
vyāmohayaṃ ca tān sarvān rathamārgaiś caran raṇe ||
te 'nyonyam abhisaṃmūḍhāḥ pātayanti sma dānavāḥ ||
teṣām ahaṃ vimūḍhānām anyonyam abhidhāvatām ||
śirāṃsi viśikhair dīptair vyaharaṃ śatasaṃghaśaḥ ||
te vadhyamānā daiteyāḥ puram āsthāya tat punaḥ ||
kham utpetuḥ sanagarā māyām āsthāya dānavīm ||
tato 'haṃ śaravarṣeṇa mahatā pratyavārayam ||
mārgam āvṛtya daityānāṃ gatiṃ caiṣām avārayam ||
tat puraṃ khacaraṃ divyaṃ kāmagaṃ divyavarcasam ||
daiteyair varadānena dhāryate sma yathāsukham ||
antarbhūmau nipatitaṃ punar ūrdhvaṃ pratiṣṭhate ||
punas tiryak prayāty āśu punar apsu nimajjati ||
amarāvatisaṃkāśaṃ puraṃ kāmagamaṃ tu tat ||
aham astrair bahuvidhaiḥ pratyagṛhṇaṃ narādhipa ||
tato 'haṃ śarajālena divyāstramuditena ca ||
nyagṛhṇaṃ saha daiteyais tat puraṃ bharatarṣabha ||
vikṣataṃ cāyasair bāṇair matprayuktair ajihmagaiḥ ||

Translation

Arjuna said: 'Learning that they were unslayable by suras and asuras, I joyfully said to Mātali: "Drive straight to this city, until I bring the enemies of the thirty gods to destruction with my weapons. Sinners who hate the suras can in no way be unslayable for me." Then Mātali swiftly bore me to Hiraṇyapura on that divine chariot yoked with hari steeds. Seeing me, the daityas, in many-colored ornaments and garments, clad in armor, mounted their chariots and rose to meet me with great speed. Enraged, of fierce prowess, the lords of the dānavas struck me with nālīka arrows, nārācas, bhallas, śaktis, ṛṣṭis, and tomaras. But I, relying on the strength of my knowledge, repelled that great shower of weapons with a great shower of astras. Moving in battle along the many paths of my chariot, I threw them all into confusion, and the dānavas, bewildered, began striking one another. Upon these confounded foes, rushing at each other, I lopped off heads by the hundreds with my blazing arrows. Being slain by me, the daityas re-entered that city and, taking up dānava illusion, rose into the sky together with the city. Then I, with a great shower of arrows, blocked the daityas' path and halted their movement. This divine flying city, blazing with heavenly splendor, moving at will, was held by the daityas through their boon as they pleased: it fell beneath the earth, rose up again, swiftly moved sideways, and sank again into the waters. This city, resembling Amarāvatī and moving at will, I checked, O king, with many astras. Then, with a net of arrows and joyfully applied divine astras, I held it fast together with the daityas. Struck by my straight iron arrows, the asura city, shattered, fell to the ground.'

Commentary

Arjuna acts as the appointed human cause of destruction for those whom the gods could not slay. His human birth here is not a weakness but a distinct place within the design.
