ततः सुबलदायादं कालकेयम् अपोथयत् ॥
जघान चास्यानुचरान् गान्धारान् सप्तसप्ततिम् ॥
पुनर् ब्रह्मवसातीयाञ् जघान रथिनो दश ॥
केकयानां रथान् सप्त हत्वा च दश कुञ्जरान् ॥
दौःशासनिरथं साश्वं गदया समपोथयत् ॥

Translation
Then he smashed down Kalakeya, the offspring of Subala, and slew his retinue — seventy-seven Gandharans. Then he slew ten chariot-warriors of the Brahmavasatis, smashed seven Kekaya chariots, and ten elephants.

The bare tally of the fallen — seventy-seven, ten, seven, ten — is no bookkeeping of slaughter but a measure of the exploit's solitude: one unarmed boy goes on mowing down whole ranks while he himself is being finished off by stealth. The verse deliberately sets the multitude of enemies beside a single fighter, so that the inequality in which he dies becomes visible. Here a greatness shows itself that does not count enemies but simply carries out its duty to the last breath.
