विशालाक्षं सुकेशान्तं चारुवाक्यं सुगन्धि च ॥

"Wide-eyed, with wondrous locks, fair-spoken, fragrant — when again shall I see your face, O son, unwounded? Shame on the strength of Bhimasena, shame on Partha the bowman, shame on the valor of the Vrishni heroes and the strength of the Panchalas! Shame on the Kekayas, the Chedis, the Matsyas and the Srinjayas, who did not guard you, the hero gone into battle, as you fell!"

The sixfold 'dhik,' 'shame,' is the cry of a mother's grief, casting reproach at all the mighty: Bhima, Arjuna, the Vrishnis, the Panchalas, the allied peoples. As with Arjuna, this is the speech of a wound, not a verdict: the warriors fought desperately. It is telling that the mother rebukes precisely the strong — for it was from them she expected deliverance. The verse teaches how to distinguish a cry of grief from a judgment of truth: a grieving mother casts 'shame' upon those she loves and had trusted, and one who loves her must accept this pain without charging it as an injustice.
