शोकस्थानं तु तच् छ्रुत्वा पार्थस्य द्विजकेतनः ॥
संस्पृश्याम्भस् ततः कृष्णः प्राङ्मुखः समवस्थितः ॥
इदं वाक्यं महातेजा बभाषे पुष्करेक्षणः ॥
हितार्थं पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्धवस्य वधे वृतः ॥

śokasthānaṃ tu tac chrutvā pārthasya dvijaketanaḥ ||
saṃspṛśyāmbhas tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ prāṅmukhaḥ samavasthitaḥ ||
idaṃ vākyaṃ mahātejā babhāṣe puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ ||
hitārthaṃ pāṇḍuputrasya saindhavasya vadhe vṛtaḥ ||

Translation
Having heard that cause of Partha's grief, Krishna — whose emblem is the brahmin — having touched water, stood facing east. And this word the mighty lotus-eyed one spoke, for the good of the son of Pandu, intent upon the slaying of the Sindhu king.

Before his teaching Krishna performs a rite: "saṃspṛśya ambhaḥ prāṅmukhaḥ samavasthitaḥ," having touched water, he stands facing east. The Lord Himself displays reverent conduct before turning his friend's heart toward Shiva. Significant here is "hitārthaṃ pāṇḍuputrasya," "for the good of the son of Pandu": all that Krishna does is for the sake of his devotee. The verse teaches that even a sacred act ought to begin in purity and in turning toward the sacred; and that the Lord attends to the good of His own in everything, never neglecting due observance even where He is sovereign without it.
