द्वितीयं चापरं नागं सहस्रशिरसं वरम् ॥
वमन्तं विपुलां ज्वालां ददृशाते ऽग्निवर्चसम् ॥
ततः कृष्णश् च पार्थश् च संस्पृश्यापः कृताञ्जली ॥
तौ नागाव् उपतस्थाते नमस्यन्तौ वृषध्वजम् ॥
गृणन्तौ वेदविदुषौ तद् ब्रह्म शतरुद्रियम् ॥
अप्रमेयं प्रणमन्तौ गत्वा सर्वात्मना भवम् ॥
dvitīyaṃ cāparaṃ nāgaṃ sahasraśirasaṃ varam ||
vamantaṃ vipulāṃ jvālāṃ dadṛśāte 'gnivarcasam ||
tataḥ kṛṣṇaś ca pārthaś ca saṃspṛśyāpaḥ kṛtāñjalī ||
tau nāgāv upatasthāte namasyantau vṛṣadhvajam ||
gṛṇantau vedaviduṣau tad brahma śatarudriyam ||
aprameyaṃ praṇamantau gatvā sarvātmanā bhavam ||
And a second, another serpent -- thousand-headed, excellent, belching vast flame, blazing like fire -- they beheld. Then Krishna and Partha, having touched water, with palms joined, approached those two serpents, honoring the Bull-bannered one, proclaiming, [both] knowers of the Vedas, that Brahman -- the Shatarudriya -- bowing to the immeasurable one, going with their whole being to Bhava.

Before the fearsome serpents the heroes answer not with weapons but with prayer: "namasyantau vṛṣadhvajam... gṛṇantau... śatarudriyam", honoring Shiva and proclaiming the Shatarudriya. "Sarvātmanā bhavam", "with their whole being to Bhava", is the fullness of surrender. It is telling that the guard is overcome not by struggle but by reverence. The verse teaches that obstacles on the path to the highest are taken not by force but by calling upon God: where fearsomeness rises, the devotee answers with a bow and a holy word, and total devotion to the Lord dissolves the threat before any clash.
