उदीच्यां दिशि धर्मात्मा सो ऽपश्यच् छ्वेतपर्वतम् ॥
कुबेरस्य विहारे च नलिनीं पद्मभूषिताम् ॥
सरिच्छ्रेष्ठां च तां गङ्गां वीक्षमाणो बहूदकाम् ॥
सदापुष्पफलैर् वृक्षैर् उपेतां स्फटिकोपलाम् ॥
सिंहव्याघ्रसमाकीर्णां नानामृगगणाकुलाम् ॥
पुण्याश्रमवतीं रम्यां मनोज्ञाण्डजसेविताम् ॥

kuberasya vihāre ca nalinīṃ padmabhūṣitām ||

In the northern direction the righteous one beheld the White Mountain, and in Kubera's garden a pond adorned with lotuses; and that Ganga, foremost of rivers, abundant with water, with trees ever in flower and fruit, strewn with crystal stones; full of lions and tigers, teeming with all kinds of beasts, possessing holy hermitages, delightful, inhabited by wondrous birds.

The path to Shiva leads not through terror but through beauty: the White Mountain, Kubera's garden, the lotus pond, the heavenly Ganga with its crystal stones and holy hermitages. It is significant that the threshold of the great ascetic's abode is a world of purity and holiness, "puṇyāśramavatīm," full of blessed hermitages. The verse teaches that approach to the sacred passes through purifying beauty: the wondrous sights of the higher world do not distract but uplift, preparing the soul for its meeting with God, to whom it is ascending.
