सात्यकिस् तु ततो द्रोणं नवभिर् नतपर्वभिः ॥
आजघान भृशं क्रुद्धो ध्वजं च निशितैः शरैः ॥
सारथिं च शतेनैव भारद्वाजस्य पश्यतः ॥
लाघवं युयुधानस्य दृष्ट्वा द्रोणो महारथः ॥
सप्तत्या सात्यकिं विद्ध्वा तुरगांश् च त्रिभिस् त्रिभिः ॥
ध्वजम् एकेन विव्याध माधवस्य रथे स्थितम् ॥
अथापरेण भल्लेन हेमपुङ्खेन पत्रिणा ॥
धनुश् चिच्छेद समरे माधवस्य महात्मनः ॥
sātyakis tu tato droṇaṃ navabhir nataparvabhiḥ ||
ājaghāna bhṛśaṃ kruddho dhvajaṃ ca niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
sārathiṃ ca śatenaiva bhāradvājasya paśyataḥ ||
lāghavaṃ yuyudhānasya dṛṣṭvā droṇo mahārathaḥ ||
saptatyā sātyakiṃ viddhvā turagāṃś ca tribhis tribhiḥ ||
dhvajam ekena vivyādha mādhavasya rathe sthitam ||
athāpareṇa bhallena hemapuṅkhena patriṇā ||
dhanuś ciccheda samare mādhavasya mahātmanaḥ ||
And Satyaki then, greatly enraged, struck Drona with nine smooth-jointed arrows, and his banner with sharp arrows. Seeing Yuyudhana's swiftness, Drona, the great warrior, pierced Satyaki with seventy arrows and his horses with three each, then with another gold-feathered, winged, wide arrow cut through the bow of Madhava, the great-souled one, in the battle.

The duel sways from side to side: now Satyaki strikes, now Drona cuts his bow. It is telling that in a clash of equals no advantage lasts long. The verse teaches that between perfect fighters there is no lasting superiority: fortune leans now to one, now to the other, and so the outcome of their meeting is decided not by superior skill but by something higher — by the supreme ordinance and the rightness of the cause.
