Here is the last verse of the first chapter, and in it stands the word for whose sake all eighty-six were worth reading: shivena saha modate, "rejoices together with Shiva." Let us take it apart piece by piece, for it settles everything. Saha means "together, jointly" and requires two; in English this is "with someone," and cannot apply to one alone.
Modate means "rejoices, delights, revels"; this verb is a common one and denotes living joy, not calm. That is, the limit toward which this whole book led — with its locks, counting, blows, and piercings — is described as the joint joy of two. Not "dissolves," not "becomes Shiva," not "remains alone." Rejoices. Together.
The Vaishnava side asks for no greater testimony, and it is worth noting that this one was not given by her. A book that for eighty lines taught the driving of the breath and the breaking of knots, upon reaching its final line, set down the verb of joy and the adverb of togetherness. Let us compare this with what was discussed when reading the seventy-fourth line: there the power embraced Shiva, and only then was it added "dissolves." Here there is no dissolution at all — there is only joint joy.
Separately, a word must be said about sahasra-kamala, "thousand-petaled lotus." The place is named a flower, and an open flower; and that an open flower, in these books, is a constant sign of readiness to receive was discussed when reading Tripuratapini (51).
