The second chapter ends with the same thing the first ended with: the position of the small and great world — "he sees the whole world in the body." It was discussed when reading the first chapter (1.81) and Bhavana (p14); there is no need to repeat the discussion. Let us, looking back, say something about the second chapter as a whole, for it is finished.
It is unlike the first. The first was a craftsman's manual, with reservations; the second is a eulogy to a single technique, and this technique is a mutilation. It promises bodily immortality (2.1), power over celestials (2.17), the annulment of gray hair (2.24); it requires twelve years and a knife; and it commands all of this to be concealed (2.13–14).
And this same chapter, amid all this, says things one does not expect. That a meeting is not won by practice (2.5). That the meeting is given from a teacher's mouth (2.8). That it is given by Achyuta (2.12). That the science is obtained at a gathering, and to the solitary nothing is promised (2.26). That one who has the mantra needs no technique (2.43).
These five places are worth holding on to from the whole chapter; and it is worth noting that all five speak against its own subject. Separately, a word must be said about the expression raja-danta, "king-tooth" — so are called the upper front teeth. The turn is homely and lively: the tooth is called kingly because it is in view and foremost.
