इत्य् उक्तो नाहम् इत्य् एवं तम् ऋषिः प्रत्युवाच ह ॥
आराधयिष्यन् द्रुपदः स तं पर्यचरत् पुनः ॥
ततः संवत्सरस्यान्ते द्रुपदं स द्विजोत्तमः ॥
उपयाजो ऽब्रवीद् राजन् काले मधुरया गिरा ॥

"To this the rishi answered him only: 'Not I.' But Drupada, wishing to appease him, courted him again; and after a year had passed, that best of the twice-born, Upayaja, said to Drupada, O king, at a fitting moment, in a sweet voice."

Here the ascetic yields neither to gifts nor to flattery. Telling is his brief "not I": Upayaja refuses even a hundred million cows — for one established in a vow, wealth holds no temptation. Here is the true brahman's freedom from greed: whoever honors dharma cannot be bought. Telling too is Drupada's persistence — a whole year of courting: the passion for revenge is tireless. Thus the scripture shows both the ascetic's steadfastness against temptation and the relentlessness of the obsessed; and only after a year does Upayaja answer — but, as will be revealed, by directing him to another.
