ब्राह्मण उवाच
एवम् उक्ते तु याजेन हुते हविषि संस्कृते ॥
उत्तस्थौ पावकात् तस्मात् कुमारो देवसंनिभः ॥
ज्वालावर्णो घोररूपः किरीटी वर्म चोत्तमम् ॥
बिभ्रत् सखड्गः सशरो धनुष्मान् विनदन् मुहुः ॥
सो ऽध्यारोहद् रथवरं तेन च प्रययौ तदा ॥
ततः प्रणेदुः पाञ्चालाः प्रहृष्टाः साधु साध्व् इति ॥
भयापहो राजपुत्रः पाञ्चालानां यशस्करः ॥
राज्ञः शोकापहो जात एष द्रोणवधाय वै ॥
इत्य् उवाच महद् भूतम् अदृश्यं खेचरं तदा ॥

uttasthau pāvakāt tasmāt kumāro devasaṃnibhaḥ ||
jvālāvarṇo ghorarūpaḥ kirīṭī varma cottamam ||
bibhrat sakhaḍgaḥ saśaro dhanuṣmān vinadan muhuḥ ||
so 'dhyārohad rathavaraṃ tena ca prayayau tadā ||
tataḥ praṇeduḥ pāñcālāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ sādhu sādhv iti ||
bhayāpaho rājaputraḥ pāñcālānāṃ yaśaskaraḥ ||
rājñaḥ śokāpaho jāta eṣa droṇavadhāya vai ||
ity uvāca mahad bhūtam adṛśyaṃ khecaraṃ tadā ||
"When Yaja had spoken thus and the consecrated oblation had been poured, there arose from that fire a godlike boy — flame-colored, terrible in form, crowned, with excellent armor, with sword, arrows, and bow, roaring again and again. He mounted an excellent chariot and set forth upon it; then the Panchalas, overjoyed, cried out: 'Excellent, excellent!' And an invisible celestial being declared: 'This prince, who dispels fear, who brings glory to the Panchalas, who removes the king's grief, has been born for the slaying of Drona.'"

Here a warrior born for destruction emerges from the sacrificial fire. It is telling that Dhrishtadyumna comes forth already grown, armed, terrible — not a child who will grow up, but a ready-made instrument of fate. Here is the hand of providence: one born of fire by heaven's own word carries a destiny that cannot be revoked — Drona's death is foretold in the very hour of his appearance. Telling, too, is that the Panchalas' joy is mixed with a grim meaning: their deliverer is another's doom. The verse thus shows that in the wheel of karma one's birth is bound to another's death; and Drupada's fiery son enters the world already marked by his fated destiny.
