सुरकार्यम् इयं काले करिष्यति सुमध्यमा ॥
अस्या हेतोः क्षत्रियाणां महद् उत्पत्स्यते भयम् ॥
तच् छ्रुत्वा सर्वपाञ्चालाः प्रणेदुः सिंहसंघवत् ॥
न चैतान् हर्षसंपूणान् इयं सेहे वसुंधरा ॥

sarvayoṣidvarā kṛṣṇā kṣayaṃ kṣatraṃ ninīṣati ||
surakāryam iyaṃ kāle kariṣyati sumadhyamā ||

tac chrutvā sarvapāñcālāḥ praṇeduḥ siṃhasaṃghavat ||
na caitān harṣasaṃpūṇān iyaṃ sehe vasuṃdharā ||
"And to the newly born maiden, lovely-hipped, a bodiless voice said: 'Krishna, the best of all women, will lead the kshatra to destruction; this slender-waisted one will accomplish the work of the gods in due time, and because of her great fear will arise among the kshatriyas.' Hearing this, all the Panchalas roared like a pride of lions, and the earth could scarcely bear them, so filled were they with joy."

Here the higher purpose of Draupadi — 'the work of the gods' — is disclosed. It is telling that the newly born maiden is foretold as the instrument of the kshatra's destruction: through her heaven's will shall be accomplished — the relief of the earth from the burden of unrighteous warriors. Here is disclosed a connection with the design of the Lord's descent: the great war in which the flower of the kshatriyas will fall is the earth's purification, and Draupadi is one link in that providence. Telling, too, is that the Panchalas rejoice without knowing that their joy is wedded to a coming terror for the kshatriyas. The verse thus shows that Draupadi's birth is inscribed within a great design; and beneath the father's rejoicing lies the tread of a fate leading the world toward its great purification.
