श्रुत्वा तु वाक्यानि पुरोहितस्य; यान्य् उक्तवान् भारत धर्मराजः ॥
जिज्ञासयैवाथ कुरूत्तमानां; द्रव्याण्य् अनेकान्य् उपसंजहार ॥
फलानि माल्यानि सुसंस्कृतानि; चर्माणि वर्माणि तथासनानि ॥
गाश् चैव राजन्न् अथ चैव रज्जूर्; द्रव्याणि चान्यानि कृषीनिमित्तम् ॥
अन्येषु शिल्पेषु च यान्य् अपि स्युः; सर्वाणि कॢप्तान्य् अखिलेन तत्र ॥
क्रीडानिमित्तानि च यानि तानि; सर्वाणि तत्रोपजहार राजा ॥

jijñāsayaivātha kurūttamānāṃ; dravyāṇy anekāny upasaṃjahāra ||
phalāni mālyāni susaṃskṛtāni; carmāṇi varmāṇi tathāsanāni ||
gāś caiva rājann atha caiva rajjūr; dravyāṇi cānyāni kṛṣīnimittam ||
anyeṣu śilpeṣu ca yāny api syuḥ; sarvāṇi kḷptāny akhilena tatra ||
krīḍānimittāni ca yāni tāni; sarvāṇi tatropajahāra rājā ||
"Having heard the words of the purohita, those spoken by the King of Dharma Yudhishthira, Drupada then, solely to test the best of the Kurus, gathered many things: fruits, skillfully arranged garlands, hides, armor and seats, and cows, O king, and ropes, and other implements for tilling, and whatever there is among other crafts -- all prepared there in full -- and whatever things there are for amusement, all of them the king displayed there."

Here the king devises a cunning test to discern the true rank of his guests. It is telling that Drupada lays out things belonging to every walk of life -- farming, crafts, amusement, and war: whatever a man is drawn to reveals his own nature. Here is the ancient understanding that svabhava, one's innate nature, draws each toward what is kindred to it: the heart's inclination is truer than words. So the scripture shows Drupada's wise stratagem, and the arrayed goods become a silent question about the true nature of the newcomers.
