वैशंपायन उवाच
तथा शैलनिपातेन भीषिताः खाण्डवालयाः ॥
दानवा राक्षसा नागास् तरक्ष्वृक्षवनौकसः ॥
द्विपाः प्रभिन्नाः शार्दूलाः सिंहाः केसरिणस् तथा ॥
मृगाश् च महिषाश् चैव शतशः पक्षिणस् तथा ॥
समुद्विग्ना विससृपुस् तथान्या भूतजातयः ॥
तं दावं समुदीक्षन्तः कृष्णौ चाभ्युद्यतायुधौ ॥
उत्पातनादशब्देन संत्रासित इवाभवन् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tathā śailanipātena bhīṣitāḥ khāṇḍavālayāḥ ||
dānavā rākṣasā nāgās tarakṣvṛkṣavanaukasaḥ ||
dvipāḥ prabhinnāḥ śārdūlāḥ siṃhāḥ kesariṇas tathā ||
mṛgāś ca mahiṣāś caiva śataśaḥ pakṣiṇas tathā ||
samudvignā visasṛpus tathānyā bhūtajātayaḥ ||
taṃ dāvaṃ samudīkṣantaḥ kṛṣṇau cābhyudyatāyudhau ||
utpātanādaśabdena saṃtrāsita ivābhavan ||
Vaishampayana said: "Thus, terrified by the fall of the mountain, the dwellers of Khandava — danavas, rakshasas, nagas, hyenas, bears, forest-dwellers, mad elephants, tigers, maned lions, and deer, and buffaloes by the hundreds, and birds, agitated, fled, and other races of beings; gazing upon that conflagration and upon the two Krishnas with weapons raised, by the sound of the ominous roars they were as if terrified."

Here all living things scatter in terror before destruction. It is telling that even fearsome beasts tremble: before the face of death the strong and the weak stand equal. This is a reminder of the universal fear of death within samsara. So does scripture reveal the tumult of creatures; and the compassionate heart grieves to see their terror.
