अथासुरं मयं नाम तक्षकस्य निवेशनात् ॥
विप्रद्रवन्तं सहसा ददर्श मधुसूदनः ॥
तम् अग्निः प्रार्थयाम् आस दिधक्षुर् वातसारथिः ॥
देहवान् वै जटी भूत्वा नदंश् च जलदो यथा ॥
जिघांसुर् वासुदेवश् च चक्रम् उद्यम्य विष्ठितः ॥
athāsuraṃ mayaṃ nāma takṣakasya niveśanāt ||
vipradravantaṃ sahasā dadarśa madhusūdanaḥ ||
tam agniḥ prārthayām āsa didhakṣur vātasārathiḥ ||
dehavān vai jaṭī bhūtvā nadaṃś ca jalado yathā ||
jighāṃsur vāsudevaś ca cakram udyamya viṣṭhitaḥ ||
Then Madhusudana beheld the asura named Maya fleeing swiftly from the dwelling of Takshaka; the fire, whose charioteer is the wind, desired to overtake him, wishing to burn him, taking embodied form, shaggy-haired, roaring like a storm cloud; and Vasudeva, wishing to slay him, stood with his chakra raised.

Here the doomed Maya runs between fire and chakra. It is significant that both Agni and Krishna are ready to destroy him: destruction seemed inescapable. Here it is revealed that in extremity the one true refuge is laid bare -- the plea for shelter. Thus scripture shows Maya's helplessness; and in this moment he will cry out to Arjuna.
