Mercy and judgment meet here in a single fire. It is telling that Agni spares the fledglings who have surrendered to him and burns everything else: for those who take refuge in him he is a savior, for others a destroyer. Thus surrender (sharana) turns a fearsome force into protection. So the scripture shows the deliverance of the sharngakas -- praise joined with refuge kept them safe amid a universal destruction.
