विना हंसेन लोके ऽस्मिन् नाहं जीवितुम् उत्सहे ॥
इत्य् एतां मतिम् आस्थाय डिभको निधनं गतः ॥
तथा तु डिभकं श्रुत्वा हंसः परपुरंजयः ॥
प्रपेदे यमुनाम् एव सो ऽपि तस्यां न्यमज्जत ॥
तौ स राजा जरासंधः श्रुत्वाप्सु निधनं गतौ ॥
स्वपुरं शूरसेनानां प्रययौ भरतर्षभ ॥

vinā haṃsena loke 'smin nāhaṃ jīvitum utsahe ||
ity etāṃ matim āsthāya ḍibhako nidhanaṃ gataḥ ||
tathā tu ḍibhakaṃ śrutvā haṃsaḥ parapuraṃjayaḥ ||
prapede yamunām eva so 'pi tasyāṃ nyamajjata ||
tau sa rājā jarāsaṃdhaḥ śrutvāpsu nidhanaṃ gatau ||
svapuraṃ śūrasenānāṃ prayayau bharatarṣabha ||

"'Without Hamsa I cannot bear to live in this world' — having taken up this thought, Dibhaka gave himself to death; and Hamsa, conqueror of enemy cities, hearing of Dibhaka, hastened to the Yamuna and likewise plunged into it. And King Jarasandha, hearing that those two had perished in the waters, withdrew to his own city of the Shurasenas, O bull of the Bharatas."
