शृणु राजन् जरासंधःśṛṇu rājan jarāsaṃdhaḥlisten, O king: Jarasandha,
यत्-वीर्यः यत्-पराक्रमःyat-vīryaḥ yat-parākramaḥof what valor, of what might,
यथा च उपेक्षितः अस्माभिःyathā ca upekṣitaḥ asmābhiḥand how he was tolerated by us,
बहुशः कृत-विप्रियःbahuśaḥ kṛta-vipriyaḥwho many times did what was unpleasant;
अक्षौहिणीनाम् तिसृणाम्akṣauhiṇīnām tisṛṇāmof three akshauhinis
आसीत् समर-दर्पितःāsīt samara-darpitaḥwas [the lord], proud in battle,
राजा बृहद्रथः नामrājā bṛhadrathaḥ nāmaa king named Brihadratha,

Here the tale traces back to the tyrant's father — a king worthy and pious. It is telling that Brihadratha, ‘thin from vows,’ resembling Indra, shows that a good root is no guarantee of good fruit, for his son will become a villain. Thus the scripture shows that the righteousness of fathers is not inherited of itself; and next come the king's own virtues.
