शुश्राव तपसि श्रान्तम् उदारं चण्डकौशिकम् ॥
यदृच्छयागतं तं तु वृक्षमूलम् उपाश्रितम् ॥
पत्नीभ्यां सहितो राजा सर्वरत्नैर् अतोषयत् ॥

‘And then he heard of the noble Chandakaushika, son of Kakshivat of the great-souled line of Gautama, wearied from austerity; and that one, who had come by chance and settled at the foot of a tree, the king, together with both his wives, gratified with all manner of treasures.’

Here the king honors the arriving sage with the utmost care. It is telling that grace from above comes through service to the holy: whoever receives an ascetic with hospitality opens the way to a gift. Thus the scripture shows reverence for the holy as a gateway to grace; and next the sage grants a boon.
