नातिवर्तिष्य इत्य् एवं पत्नीभ्यां संनिधौ तदा ॥

‘He, the man of great valor, took as wives the twin daughters of the king of Kashi, honored for beauty and wealth, O bull of the Bharatas; and that bull among men made with the two of them a mutual pact before both wives: “I shall not favor one over the other.”’

Here the king sets equal love between his two wives as a vow. It is telling that he keeps fairness even within the family: impartiality is a virtue not only on the throne but also in the household. Thus the scripture shows even-handedness in every relation; and next comes his childlessness.
