यश् च नो ब्राह्मणं हन्याद् यश् च नो ब्राह्मणान् द्विषेत् ॥
न नः स समितिं गच्छेद् यश् च नो निर्वपेत् कृषिम् ॥
तृणानि भूमिर् उदकं वाक् चतुर्थी च सूनृता ॥
सताम् एतानि गेहेषु नोच्छिद्यन्ते कदा चन ॥
श्रद्धया परया राजन्न् उपनीतानि सत्कृतिम् ॥
प्रवृत्तानि महाप्राज्ञ धर्मिणां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥
सूक्ष्मो ऽपि भारं नृपते स्यन्दनो वै; शक्तो वोढुं न तथान्ये महीजाः ॥
एवं युक्ता भारसहा भवन्ति; महाकुलीना न तथान्ये मनुष्याः ॥
न तन् मित्रं यस्य कोपाद् बिभेति; यद् वा मित्रं शङ्कितेनोपचर्यम् ॥
यस्मिन् मित्रे पितरीवाश्वसीत; तद् वै मित्रं संगतानीतराणि ॥

na naḥ sa samitiṃ gacched yaś ca no nirvapet kṛṣim ||

pravṛttāni mahāprājña dharmiṇāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām ||
sūkṣmo 'pi bhāraṃ nṛpate syandano vai; śakto voḍhuṃ na tathānye mahījāḥ ||
evaṃ yuktā bhārasahā bhavanti; mahākulīnā na tathānye manuṣyāḥ ||
na tan mitraṃ yasya kopād bibheti; yad vā mitraṃ śaṅkitenopacaryam ||
yasmin mitre pitarīvāśvasīta; tad vai mitraṃ saṃgatānītarāṇi ||
Let none of our race be a kindler of quarrels; let none serve as a king's minister who steals the wealth of others; let none foment internal strife; let none behave deceitfully or falsely; and let none eat before serving the rishis, the gods, and guests. Whoever of our race slays brahmanas, or bears them hatred, or hinders agriculture or otherwise harms it, does not deserve our company. Straw (for a seat), ground (to sit upon), water (to wash the feet and face), and fourth, sweet words — of these, the houses (of the virtuous) are never lacking. Virtuous people, devoted to the practice of righteous deeds, when they wish to entertain (guests), are ready to offer these things with reverence. Like the sandalwood tree, O king, though slender, is able to bear weights that the wood of other, far thicker trees cannot bear; so too are the members of noble families always able to bear the burden of great cares that ordinary people cannot.

This passage (5.36.31-35) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace is already underway against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
