Whether you are poor or rich, you must honor your friends. Only when a favor is asked can the sincerity or insincerity of friends be known. Grief destroys beauty; grief destroys strength; grief destroys understanding; and grief brings on illness. Sorrow, far from helping one attain one's aim, wastes away the body and gladdens one's enemies. Therefore do not give way to grief. Men die and are born again and again; again and again they decline and again they flourish; again and again they beg help of others and are themselves begged for help; again and again they weep and are wept over. Happiness and misery, abundance and want, gain and loss, life and death touch all in due turn. Therefore the steadfast man should neither exult in joy nor grieve in sorrow. The six senses are ever restless. Through whichever of them predominates, understanding leaks away in proportion to the force it takes, like water escaping a pot through its holes.'

This fragment (5.36.41-45) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even as war looms as inevitable. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of an envoy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
