तथाहम् अपि ते रक्ष्यः सदैव द्विजसत्तम ॥
तव प्रसादाद् इच्छामि सिन्धुराजानम् आहवे ॥
निहन्तुं द्विपदां श्रेष्ठ प्रतिज्ञां रक्ष मे विभो ॥

'As Ashvatthaman, o venerable one, is protected by you, o sinless one, so too am I always protected by you, o best of the twice-born. By your grace I wish to slay the king of Sindhu in battle, o best of men; keep my vow, o lord.'

Arjuna sets himself level with the teacher's own son: 'aśvatthāmā yathā… tathā aham api te rakṣyaḥ,' 'as Ashvatthaman, so am I too kept by you.' The plea 'pratijñāṃ rakṣa me,' 'keep my vow,' is addressed to the one who protects the enemy — and in this lies trust in the very nature of the guru. It is telling that the devotee appeals not to the teacher's weakness but to his fatherhood. The verse teaches that the true disciple honors in his teacher a father even in the hour of confrontation: he asks not for mercy but for fatherly favor; and the memory of the guru-disciple bond remains sacred even where duty has placed them on opposite sides.
