अर्जुन उवाच
गुरुर् भवान् न मे शत्रुः शिष्यः पुत्रसमो ऽस्मि ते ॥
न चास्ति स पुमांल् लोके यस् त्वां युधि पराजयेत् ॥
संजय उवाच
एवं ब्रुवाणो बीभत्सुर् जयद्रथवधोत्सुकः ॥
त्वरायुक्तो महाबाहुस् तत् सैन्यं समुपाद्रवत् ॥
arjuna uvāca
gurur bhavān na me śatruḥ śiṣyaḥ putrasamo 'smi te ||
na cāsti sa pumāṃl loke yas tvāṃ yudhi parājayet ||
saṃjaya uvāca
evaṃ bruvāṇo bībhatsur jayadrathavadhotsukaḥ ||
tvarāyukto mahābāhus tat sainyaṃ samupādravat ||
[Arjuna:] "You are my teacher, not my enemy; I am your disciple, like a son to you. And there is no man in the world who could conquer you in battle." Speaking thus, Bibhatsu, eager to kill Jayadratha, full of haste, the mighty-armed one, rushed toward that army.

The summit of reverence: "gurur bhavān na me śatruḥ; śiṣyaḥ putrasamo 'smi te" — "you are my teacher, not my enemy; I am your disciple, like a son to you." Even while passing him by in battle, Arjuna refuses the very word "enemy." And he pays the highest honor: "there is no one in the world who could conquer you." It is telling that he gets past the unconquerable not by force but by reverence and by the Lord's will. The verse teaches that for a noble soul, the teacher never becomes an enemy: the bond of guru and disciple is sacred beyond every division of war; and to go around one's teacher while acknowledging him unconquerable and calling oneself his son is not weakness but the highest fidelity to the dharma of reverence.
