ततो ऽस्य संयुगे द्रोणो दृष्ट्वा कर्मातिमानुषम् ॥
युयुधानस्य राजेन्द्र मनसेदम् अचिन्तयत् ॥
एतद् अस्त्रबलं रामे कार्तवीर्ये धनंजये ॥
भीष्मे च पुरुषव्याघ्रे यद् इदं सात्वतां वरे ॥
तं चास्य मनसा द्रोणः पूजयाम् आस विक्रमम् ॥
लाघवं वासवस्येव संप्रेक्ष्य द्विजसत्तमः ॥
tato 'sya saṃyuge droṇo dṛṣṭvā karmātimānuṣam ||
yuyudhānasya rājendra manasedam acintayat ||
etad astrabalaṃ rāme kārtavīrye dhanaṃjaye ||
bhīṣme ca puruṣavyāghre yad idaṃ sātvatāṃ vare ||
taṃ cāsya manasā droṇaḥ pūjayām āsa vikramam ||
lāghavaṃ vāsavasyeva saṃprekṣya dvijasattamaḥ ||
Then Drona, having seen in battle the superhuman deed of Yuyudhana, O lord of kings, thought thus in his mind: 'This power of weapons was found in Rama, in Kartavirya, in Dhananjaya and in Bhishma, tiger among men -- what then is this skill in the best of the Satvatas!' And having beheld his valor, his swiftness like that of Vasava [Indra], Drona, foremost of the twice-born, honored it in his mind.

In his heart Drona pays tribute to his foe: he sets Satyaki alongside the greatest -- Rama Jamadagnya, Kartavirya, Arjuna, Bhishma. He 'honored the valor' -- even in a fight to the death. It is telling that a true master recognizes mastery in his opponent. The verse teaches the nobility of acknowledging greatness in an enemy: a warrior of honor esteems the valor of the one he fights unto death. The capacity to admire an adversary's skill without diminishing it is the seal of true greatness, free of petty envy.
