धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
बाणे तस्मिन् निकृत्ते तु धृष्टद्युम्ने च मोक्षिते ॥
तेन वृष्णिप्रवीरेण युयुधानेन संजय ॥
अमर्षितो महेष्वासः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥
नरव्याघ्रः शिनेः पौत्रे द्रोणः किम् अकरोद् युधि ॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
bāṇe tasmin nikṛtte tu dhṛṣṭadyumne ca mokṣite ||
tena vṛṣṇipravīreṇa yuyudhānena saṃjaya ||
amarṣito maheṣvāsaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ||
naravyāghraḥ śineḥ pautre droṇaḥ kim akarod yudhi ||
[Dhritarashtra:] "When that arrow was cut off and Dhrishtadyumna was freed by that hero of the Vrishnis, Yuyudhana [Satyaki], O Sanjaya — what did the impatient great archer, the best of all who bear arms, the tiger among men, do in battle against the grandson of Shini?"

The blind king asks about a single duel, plucking it out of the general chaos. Tellingly, his attention is drawn to the meeting of two of the greatest — Drona and Satyaki. The verse teaches that even amid boundless slaughter the eye seeks the personal: behind the impersonal mass of battle lie individual fates and encounters, and the listener longs to know not of the countless fallen, but of the fortunes of particular figures, for in them the war acquires a human dimension.
