यांस् त्व् एतान् अपरान् राजन् नागान् सप्तशतानि च ॥
प्रेक्षसे वर्मसंछन्नान् किरातैः समधिष्ठितान् ॥
किरातराजो यान् प्रादाद् गृहीतः सव्यसाचिना ॥
स्वलंकृतांस् तथा प्रेष्यान् इच्छञ् जीवितम् आत्मनः ॥
आसन्न् एते पुरा राजंस् तव कर्मकरा दृढम् ॥
त्वाम् एवाद्य युयुत्सन्ते पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥
yāṃs tv etān aparān rājan nāgān saptaśatāni ca ||
prekṣase varmasaṃchannān kirātaiḥ samadhiṣṭhitān ||
kirātarājo yān prādād gṛhītaḥ savyasācinā ||
svalaṃkṛtāṃs tathā preṣyān icchañ jīvitam ātmanaḥ ||
āsann ete purā rājaṃs tava karmakarā dṛḍham ||
tvām evādya yuyutsante paśya kālasya paryayam ||
"And these other elephants, seven hundred of them, O king, which you see covered in armor, mounted by Kiratas — these the king of the Kiratas, seized by Savyasachin, gave over, richly adorned, as submissive servants, wishing to preserve his own life. These, O king, were formerly your own servants indeed, and now they long to fight against you yourself — behold the reversal of time!"

"Paśya kālasya paryayam" — behold the reversal of time: those who once served now rise up as enemies. It is significant that time overturns every position, and yesterday's servant becomes today's foe. The verse teaches that nothing in the world is permanent: friendship and service, alliance and subjection are as changeable as all things under the sway of time; and the wise, seeing how the wheel turns, do not rely on the present state, remembering that time overturns everything.
