प्रविश्य च रणे द्रोणः पाञ्चालानां वरूथिनीम् ॥
द्रावयाम् आस योधान् वै शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥
ततो द्रोणो महाराज नाम विश्राव्य संयुगे ॥
पाण्डुपाञ्चालमत्स्यानां प्रचक्रे कदनं महत् ॥
तं जयन्तम् अनीकानि भारद्वाजं ततस् ततः ॥
पाञ्चालपुत्रो द्युतिमान् वीरकेतुः समभ्ययात् ॥
praviśya ca raṇe droṇaḥ pāñcālānāṃ varūthinīm ||
drāvayām āsa yodhān vai śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
tato droṇo mahārāja nāma viśrāvya saṃyuge ||
pāṇḍupāñcālamatsyānāṃ pracakre kadanaṃ mahat ||
taṃ jayantam anīkāni bhāradvājaṃ tatas tataḥ ||
pāñcālaputro dyutimān vīraketuḥ samabhyayāt ||
And having entered the battle, Droṇa put the warriors of the Pāñcāla host to flight by hundreds and thousands. Then Droṇa, O great king, proclaiming his own name in the fight, wrought great slaughter among the Pāṇḍus, Pāñcālas, and Matsyas. As he, the son of Bharadvāja, overcame the ranks here and there, the resplendent son of Pāñcāla, Vīraketu, advanced upon him.

Droṇa "nāma viśrāvya," proclaims his own name before the slaughter: such is the master's terror that his very name becomes a weapon. It is telling that the rejected counsel of peace has turned into fresh carnage. The verse teaches that the refusal of reconciliation surrenders all to the sword: where the voice of peace goes unheeded, the weapon speaks, and blood that could have been stopped by a word is now shed by the hand — such is the fruit of deafness to good counsel.
