महाजलधरान् व्योम्नि मातरिश्वा विवान् इव ॥
ततः शरं महाघोरं सूर्यपावकसंनिभम् ॥
संदधे परवीरघ्नो वीरकेतुरथं प्रति ॥
te śarair agnisaṃkāśais tomaraiś ca mahādhanaiḥ ||
śastraiś ca vividhai rājan droṇam ekam avākiran ||
nihatya tān bāṇagaṇān droṇo rājan samantataḥ ||
mahājaladharān vyomni mātariśvā vivān iva ||
tataḥ śaraṃ mahāghoraṃ sūryapāvakasaṃnibham ||
saṃdadhe paravīraghno vīraketurathaṃ prati ||
They, with arrows like fire, with costly spears, and with weapons of every kind, O king, overwhelmed Droṇa alone. Having beaten down those swarms of arrows, Droṇa, O king, scattered them on every side, as the wind scatters great cloud-masses in the sky. Then the slayer of enemy heroes fitted a most terrible arrow, resembling the sun and fire, against Vīraketu's chariot.

Droṇa disperses the clouds of arrows, "mātariśvā vivān iva," like the wind scattering clouds: calm might dissolves the concerted onslaught of many. It is telling that one man holds an entire encirclement at bay. The verse teaches that the gathered strength of one can overcome the scattered force of many: as the wind effortlessly disperses piled-up clouds, so one who has mastered his art scatters the storm of weapons hurled upon him.
