चित्रकेतुः सुधन्वा च चित्रवर्मा च भारत ॥
तथा चित्ररथश् चैव भ्रातृव्यसनकर्षिताः ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त सहिता भारद्वाजं युयुत्सवः ॥
मुञ्चन्तः शरवर्षाणि तपान्ते जलदा इव ॥
स वध्यमानो बहुधा राजपुत्रैर् महारथैः ॥
व्यश्वसूतरथांश् चक्रे कुमारान् कुपितो रणे ॥
citraketuḥ sudhanvā ca citravarmā ca bhārata ||
tathā citrarathaś caiva bhrātṛvyasanakarṣitāḥ ||
abhyadravanta sahitā bhāradvājaṃ yuyutsavaḥ ||
muñcantaḥ śaravarṣāṇi tapānte jaladā iva ||
sa vadhyamāno bahudhā rājaputrair mahārathaiḥ ||
vyaśvasūtarathāṃś cakre kumārān kupito raṇe ||
Citraketu and Sudhanvan, and Citravarman, O Bharata, and also Citraratha, distressed by their brother's calamity, rushed together upon the son of Bharadvaja, eager for battle, casting showers of arrows as clouds do at the close of the hot season. He, struck many times over by the princes, the great chariot-warriors, enraged in the fight, stripped the princes of their horses, charioteers, and chariots.

The brothers rush to avenge the fallen -- "bhrātṛvyasanakarṣitāḥ", distressed by their brother's calamity: love of kin drives them toward certain ruin. It is telling that family attachment, unlit by discernment, leads them all into the same abyss. The verse teaches that vengeance for a loved one, unweighed by reason, only multiplies loss: grief for a brother pulls the brothers after him, and unassuaged sorrow, turned into a rush to avenge, destroys the avengers one after another.
