ते क्षिप्ता भीमसेनेन शरा भारत भारतान् ॥
विदार्य खं समुत्पेतुः स्वर्णपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः ॥
तेषां विदार्य चेतांसि शरा हेमविभूषिताः ॥
व्यराजन्त महाराज सुपर्णा इव खेचराः ॥
शोणितादिग्धवाजाग्राः सप्त हेमपरिष्कृताः ॥
पुत्राणां तव राजेन्द्र पीत्वा शोणितम् उद्गताः ॥
ते शरैर् भिन्नमर्माणो रथेभ्यः प्रापतन् क्षितौ ॥
गिरिसानुरुहा भग्ना द्विपेनेव महाद्रुमाः ॥
te kṣiptā bhīmasenena śarā bhārata bhāratān ||
vidārya khaṃ samutpetuḥ svarṇapuṅkhāḥ śilāśitāḥ ||
teṣāṃ vidārya cetāṃsi śarā hemavibhūṣitāḥ ||
vyarājanta mahārāja suparṇā iva khecarāḥ ||
śoṇitādigdhavājāgrāḥ sapta hemapariṣkṛtāḥ ||
putrāṇāṃ tava rājendra pītvā śoṇitam udgatāḥ ||
te śarair bhinnamarmāṇo rathebhyaḥ prāpatan kṣitau ||
girisānuruhā bhagnā dvipeneva mahādrumāḥ ||
Those arrows, loosed by Bhimasena, O Bharata, at the Bharatas, tore through the sky and soared, golden-feathered, whetted on stone. Rending their hearts, the gold-adorned arrows shone, O great king, like Garudas soaring through the sky. Seven arrows, adorned with gold, their tips reddened with blood, having drunk the blood of your sons, O lord of kings, passed clean through. Their vital parts pierced by the arrows, they fell from their chariots to the ground, like great trees grown on mountain crags, broken by an elephant.

The seven fall like mountain trees broken by an elephant — a might that fells even what is rooted in the heights. It is telling that the blood-reddened arrows are likened to soaring Garudas: death is clothed in the image of a kingly bird. The verse teaches that overwhelming power sweeps away even what stands firm; however lofty and valiant the fallen, when thrown en masse against the unconquerable, they only add to the count of wasted lives.
