एकत्रिंशन् महाराज पुत्रांस् तव महारथान् ॥
हतान् दुर्योधनो दृष्ट्वा क्षत्तुः सस्मार तद् वचः ॥
तद् इदं समनुप्राप्तं क्षत्तुर् हितकरं वचः ॥
इति संचिन्त्य राजासौ नोत्तरं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥
यद् द्यूतकाले दुर्बुद्धिर् अब्रवीत् तनयस् तव ॥
यच् च कर्णो ऽब्रवीत् कृष्णां सभायां परुषं वचः ॥
ekatriṃśan mahārāja putrāṃs tava mahārathān ||
hatān duryodhano dṛṣṭvā kṣattuḥ sasmāra tad vacaḥ ||
tad idaṃ samanuprāptaṃ kṣattur hitakaraṃ vacaḥ ||
iti saṃcintya rājāsau nottaraṃ pratyapadyata ||
yad dyūtakāle durbuddhir abravīt tanayas tava ||
yac ca karṇo 'bravīt kṛṣṇāṃ sabhāyāṃ paruṣaṃ vacaḥ ||
Seeing thirty-one of your sons, great warriors, slain, O great king, Duryodhana remembered that word of the kshattri [Vidura]. 'There it is, come to pass — the good word of the kshattri,' so thinking, that king found nothing to answer. What your evil-minded son had said during the game, and what Karna had said to Krishna [Draupadi] — harsh words — in the assembly...

Thirty-one sons are dead — and Duryodhana at last recalls Vidura's warning, which he had once ignored; but insight comes when there is nothing left to answer with. It is telling — 'na uttaram pratyapadyata' — he finds no answer: before a fulfilled prophecy, every self-justification falls silent. The verse teaches that wise counsel, rejected in its hour, returns as a verdict; and it is bitterest of all to recognize the rightness of the one you did not heed, when nothing can any longer be set right.
