प्रवरान् आत्मजानां ते सुतांश् चान्यान् महारथान् ॥
यान् यांश् च ददृशे भीमश् चक्षुर्विषयम् आगतान् ॥
पुत्रांस् तव महाबाहो त्वरया ताञ् जघान ह ॥
त्वत्कृते ह्य् अहम् अद्राक्षं दह्यमानां वरूथिनीम् ॥
सहस्रशः शरैर् मुक्तैः पाण्डवेन वृषेण च ॥
pravarān ātmajānāṃ te sutāṃś cānyān mahārathān ||
yān yāṃś ca dadṛśe bhīmaś cakṣurviṣayam āgatān ||
putrāṃs tava mahābāho tvarayā tāñ jaghāna ha ||
tvatkṛte hy aham adrākṣaṃ dahyamānāṃ varūthinīm ||
sahasraśaḥ śarair muktaiḥ pāṇḍavena vṛṣeṇa ca ||
The foremost of your sons, and other sons, great warriors — whichever ones Bhima saw come within his sight, those he slew. For it was by your fault that I saw the army consumed by thousands, by arrows loosed by the Pandava and by Vrisha [Karna].

Sanjaya concludes with a direct rebuke: 'by your fault I saw the army perishing' — the chronicler lays the blood not on the fighters but on the one who allowed the war. It is significant that both slayers are named, Bhima and Karna: the slaughter makes no distinction between right and wrong among the perishing thousands. The verse teaches that responsibility for war rests on the one who had the power to avert it; and a witness to its horror has the right to name the guilty one to his face.
