[Karna:] "This one is brave, boastful in battle, and feeble-minded, lowest of the brahmins; let him meet my valor — release him, best of the Kurus." [Duryodhana:] "This we forgive you, son of the charioteer, most witless one; this arrogant pride of yours Phalguna will destroy. Ashvatthaman, be gracious, you must forgive, O bestower of honor; anger must not be shown toward the charioteer's son in any way. Upon you, Karna, Kripa, Drona, the king of Madra, and Saubala [Shakuni] rests a great task; be gracious, best of the brahmins."

Duryodhana quenches the quarrel by recalling their shared cause: "everything rests upon you all." It is telling that even the peacemaker cannot resist a jab: "Arjuna will destroy your pride." The verse teaches that a leader must quell discord among his own for the sake of the common goal; but a reconciliation marred by a barb is fragile — it puts out the fire while tossing in a spark.
