अद्य मद्बाणजालानि विमुक्तानि सहस्रशः ॥
द्रक्ष्यन्ति समरे योधाः शलभानाम् इवायतीः ॥
अद्य बाणमयं वर्षं सृजतो मम धन्विनः ॥
जीमूतस्येव घर्मान्ते द्रक्ष्यन्ति युधि सैनिकाः ॥
जेष्याम्य् अद्य रणे पार्थं सायकैर् नतपर्वभिः ॥
तिष्ठध्वं समरे शूरा भयं त्यजत फल्गुनात् ॥
न हि मद्वीर्यम् आसाद्य फल्गुनः प्रसहिष्यति ॥
यथा वेलां समासाद्य सागरो मकरालयः ॥
adya madbāṇajālāni vimuktāni sahasraśaḥ ||
drakṣyanti samare yodhāḥ śalabhānām ivāyatīḥ ||
adya bāṇamayaṃ varṣaṃ sṛjato mama dhanvinaḥ ||
jīmūtasyeva gharmānte drakṣyanti yudhi sainikāḥ ||
jeṣyāmy adya raṇe pārthaṃ sāyakair nataparvabhiḥ ||
tiṣṭhadhvaṃ samare śūrā bhayaṃ tyajata phalgunāt ||
na hi madvīryam āsādya phalgunaḥ prasahiṣyati ||
yathā velāṃ samāsādya sāgaro makarālayaḥ ||
'Now warriors in battle will see my nets of arrows, loosed by the thousands, like swarms of locusts. Now warriors in the fight will see the downpour of arrows from me, the archer, pouring it forth like from a cloud at the close of the heat. Today in battle I shall vanquish Partha with smooth-jointed arrows; stand firm in battle, brave ones, cast off your fear of Phalguna. For, having met my valor, Phalguna shall not prevail -- as the ocean, abode of makaras, does not overstep the shore it has reached.'

Duryodhana rallies his troops with a boast -- 'Arjuna will not overcome me, as the ocean does not cross the shore.' It is notable that the same boast had sounded from those who fell before him: words are loud, the outcome unknown. The verse teaches that encouragement by deed weighs more than encouragement by word; and a leader who quells his army's fear with a loud vow should first weigh whether he is repeating the oaths of those already fallen, who likewise failed to keep them.
