ततो द्रौणिः कृपः शल्यो हार्दिक्यश् च महारथः ॥
प्रत्युद्ययुस् तदा पार्थं सूतपुत्रपरीप्सया ॥
आयान्तं दृश्य कौन्तेयं वृत्रं देवचमूम् इव ॥
प्रत्युद्ययौ तदा कर्णो यथा शक्रः प्रतापवान् ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
संरब्धं फल्गुनं दृष्ट्वा कालान्तकयमोपमम् ॥
कर्णो वैकर्तनः सूत प्रत्यपद्यत् किम् उत्तरम् ॥
स ह्य् अस्पर्धत पार्थेन नित्यम् एव महारथः ॥
आशंसते च बीभत्सुं युद्धे जेतुं सुदारुणे ॥
स तु तं सहसा प्राप्तं नित्यम् अत्यन्तवैरिणम् ॥
कर्णो वैकर्तनः सूत किम् उत्तरम् अपद्यत ॥
tato drauṇiḥ kṛpaḥ śalyo hārdikyaś ca mahārathaḥ ||
pratyudyayus tadā pārthaṃ sūtaputraparīpsayā ||
āyāntaṃ dṛśya kaunteyaṃ vṛtraṃ devacamūm iva ||
pratyudyayau tadā karṇo yathā śakraḥ pratāpavān ||
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
saṃrabdhaṃ phalgunaṃ dṛṣṭvā kālāntakayamopamam ||
karṇo vaikartanaḥ sūta pratyapadyat kim uttaram ||
sa hy aspardhata pārthena nityam eva mahārathaḥ ||
āśaṃsate ca bībhatsuṃ yuddhe jetuṃ sudāruṇe ||
sa tu taṃ sahasā prāptaṃ nityam atyantavairiṇam ||
karṇo vaikartanaḥ sūta kim uttaram apadyata ||
Then Drauni, Kripa, Shalya, and Hardikya, the maharatha, went forth to meet the Partha, wishing to protect the charioteer's son. Seeing the advancing Kaunteya, like Vritra against the army of gods, Karna too went forth to meet him, like the mighty Shakra. [Dhritarashtra:] "Seeing the incensed Phalguna, resembling Kala, Antaka, and Yama, what did Karna Vaikartana do in response, O suta? For he, the maharatha, always rivaled the Partha and hoped to vanquish Bibhatsu in the most terrible battle."

His comrades go out to shield Karna, and he himself advances toward Arjuna: the rivalry he has long sought. It is telling that Dhritarashtra eagerly asks about their meeting: a fateful duel lies ahead. The verse teaches that long rivalry draws toward a decisive encounter; and one who has measured himself against an opponent all his life, in his hour goes against him as Shakra against Vritra — but the outcome rests in hands higher than both.
