इत्य् उक्त्वा प्रययौ राजा सैन्येन महता वृतः ॥
फल्गुनं प्रति दुर्धर्षः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥
तं प्रयान्तं महाबाहुं दृष्ट्वा शारद्वतस् तदा ॥
अश्वत्थामानम् आसाद्य वाक्यम् एतद् उवाच ह ॥
एष राजा महाबाहुर् अमर्षी क्रोधमूर्छितः ॥
पतंगवृत्तिम् आस्थाय फल्गुनं योद्धुम् इच्छति ॥
यावन् नः पश्यमानानां प्राणान् पार्थेन संगतः ॥
न जह्यात् पुरुषव्याघ्रस् तावद् वारय कौरवम् ॥
यावत् फल्गुनबाणानां गोचरं नाधिगच्छति ॥
कौरवः पार्थिवो वीरस् तावद् वारय तं द्रुतम् ॥
ity uktvā prayayau rājā sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ ||
phalgunaṃ prati durdharṣaḥ krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ ||
taṃ prayāntaṃ mahābāhuṃ dṛṣṭvā śāradvatas tadā ||
aśvatthāmānam āsādya vākyam etad uvāca ha ||
eṣa rājā mahābāhur amarṣī krodhamūrchitaḥ ||
pataṃgavṛttim āsthāya phalgunaṃ yoddhum icchati ||
yāvan naḥ paśyamānānāṃ prāṇān pārthena saṃgataḥ ||
na jahyāt puruṣavyāghras tāvad vāraya kauravam ||
yāvat phalgunabāṇānāṃ gocaraṃ nādhigacchati ||
kauravaḥ pārthivo vīras tāvad vāraya taṃ drutam ||
Having spoken thus, the king set out, surrounded by a great army, toward Phalguna, unassailable, his eyes crimson with anger. Seeing him, the mighty-armed one, advancing, Sharadvata [Kripa] then approached Ashvatthaman and spoke these words: 'Here is the mighty-armed king, indignant, maddened by anger, who, taking on the manner of a moth, wishes to fight with Phalguna. Before he, the tiger-man, meeting Partha before our eyes, loses his life -- until then, hold back the Kauravya.'

Kripa calls Duryodhana's impulse 'the manner of a moth' -- flying into the fire: anger draws the king toward self-destruction. It is notable that his companions strive to save him from himself. The verse teaches that one blinded by fury goes to his death as a moth to the flame; and it is the duty of those near him to restrain him, for in anger a man becomes his own enemy, and to save him is to save him from his own recklessness.
