अपरे मोहिता मोहात् तम् एवाभिमुखा ययुः ॥
पाण्डवानां रणे योधाः परलोकं तथापरे ॥
सा तथा पाण्डवी सेना वध्यमाना महात्मभिः ॥
निशि संप्राद्रवद् राजन्न् उत्सृज्योल्काः सहस्रशः ॥
पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य विजयस्याच्युतस्य च ॥
यमयोर् धर्मपुत्रस्य पार्षतस्य च पश्यतः ॥
तमसा संवृते लोके न प्राज्ञायत किं चन ॥
कौरवाणां प्रकाशेन दृश्यन्ते तु द्रुताः परे ॥
apare mohitā mohāt tam evābhimukhā yayuḥ ||
pāṇḍavānāṃ raṇe yodhāḥ paralokaṃ tathāpare ||
sā tathā pāṇḍavī senā vadhyamānā mahātmabhiḥ ||
niśi saṃprādravad rājann utsṛjyolkāḥ sahasraśaḥ ||
paśyato bhīmasenasya vijayasyācyutasya ca ||
yamayor dharmaputrasya pārṣatasya ca paśyataḥ ||
tamasā saṃvṛte loke na prājñāyata kiṃ cana ||
kauravāṇāṃ prakāśena dṛśyante tu drutāḥ pare ||
...casting them aside, they flee in haste, longing for life. Others, blinded by delusion, went straight toward him; warriors of the Pandavas in the fight went to the other world, others likewise. That army of the Pandavas, so slaughtered by the great souls, fled in the night, O king, casting away their torches by the thousands, before the eyes of Bhimasena, Vijaya [Arjuna], and Achyuta [Krishna], of the twins, of the son of Dharma, and of the watching Parshata [Dhrishtadyumna]. When the world was covered in darkness, nothing at all could be discerned.

In the terror of flight, kinsmen abandon one another -- father, son, brother -- "longing for life": the fear of death tears apart the strongest bonds. It is telling that some, in their frenzy, run straight to their own destruction. The verse teaches that the fear of death lays a man bare to his foundation: some betray love for the sake of life, others in confusion hurl themselves upon the spear; and the darkness of night reveals that darkness of soul in which everything that made a man a man collapses.
