तत उत्सृज्य पाणिभ्यः प्रदीपांस् तव वाहिनी ॥

केवलं नामगोत्रेण प्रायुध्यन्त जयैषिणः ॥
अश्रूयन्त हि नामानि श्राव्यमाणानि पार्थिवैः ॥
प्रहरद्भिर् महाराज स्वयंवर इवाहवे ॥
निःशब्दम् आसीत् सहसा पुनः शब्दो महान् अभूत् ॥
क्रुद्धानां युध्यमानानां जयतां जीयताम् अपि ॥

niḥśabdam āsīt sahasā punaḥ śabdo mahān abhūt ||

As of two seas, O king, swollen at the rising of the moon [-- such was that clash]. Then, casting the torches from their hands, your army fought with the Pandavas as though maddened, at the close of that day. Shrouded in dust and darkness, most terrible, the seekers of victory fought only by name and lineage. For names indeed were heard, called out by the kings as they struck, O great king, as though at a svayamvara -- in this battle. Suddenly silence fell, and again a great sound arose.

Blinded by darkness, the warriors fight "only by name and lineage," crying out names "as at a svayamvara." This comparison is telling: the bridal contest of suitors is turned into a deadly roll call of killers. The verse teaches that war perverts the brightest of customs: where at a svayamvara a name is proclaimed to win a bride, here it is cried out to find and strike down an enemy; and the darkness of the slaughter turns a rite of life into a rite of death.
