द्रवमाणं तु तत् सैन्यं द्रोणकर्णौ महारथौ ॥
जघ्नतुः पृष्ठतो राजन् किरन्तौ सायकान् बहून् ॥
पाञ्चालेषु प्रभग्नेषु दीर्यमाणेषु सर्वशः ॥
जनार्दनो दीनमनाः प्रत्यभाषत फल्गुनम् ॥
द्रोणकर्णौ महेष्वासाव् एतौ पार्षतसात्यकी ॥
पाञ्चालांश् चैव सहितौ जघ्नतुः सायकैर् भृशम् ॥
एतयोः शरवर्षेण प्रभग्ना नो महारथाः ॥
वार्यमाणापि कौन्तेय पृतना नावतिष्ठते ॥
dravamāṇaṃ tu tat sainyaṃ droṇakarṇau mahārathau ||
jaghnatuḥ pṛṣṭhato rājan kirantau sāyakān bahūn ||
pāñcāleṣu prabhagneṣu dīryamāṇeṣu sarvaśaḥ ||
janārdano dīnamanāḥ pratyabhāṣata phalgunam ||
droṇakarṇau maheṣvāsāv etau pārṣatasātyakī ||
pāñcālāṃś caiva sahitau jaghnatuḥ sāyakair bhṛśam ||
etayoḥ śaravarṣeṇa prabhagnā no mahārathāḥ ||
vāryamāṇāpi kaunteya pṛtanā nāvatiṣṭhate ||
By the light of the Kauravas, the fleeing enemies could be seen. Drona and Karna, the great warriors, struck that fleeing army from behind, O king, scattering many arrows. When the Panchalas were broken, scattered on every side, Janardana [Krishna], downcast, spoke to Phalguna [Arjuna]: "Drona and Karna, the great archers -- here they are -- strike fiercely with arrows at Parshata [Dhrishtadyumna] and Satyaki, and the Panchalas together with them. By the shower of arrows of these two our great warriors are broken."

Even Krishna is called "downcast": the guide of the Pandavas too knows a moment of alarm when his own are broken. It is telling that the Lord, who knows the outcome, still shares the sorrow over the fallen. The verse teaches that compassion is not foreign even to the Supreme: Krishna is not indifferent to the plight of his friends, though he knows how the war will end; and in this divine grief lies the lesson that one who knows the coming victory does not remain cold to the present pain of those he leads.
