दुर्योधन उवाच
आचार्यपुत्र यद्य् एतद् द्विर् अस्त्रं न प्रयुज्यते ॥
अन्यैर् गुरुघ्ना वध्यन्ताम् अस्त्रैर् अस्त्रविदां वर ॥
त्वयि ह्य् अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि यथा स्युस् त्र्यम्बके तथा ॥
इच्छतो न हि ते मुच्येत् क्रुद्धस्यापि पुरंदरः ॥
duryodhana uvāca
ācāryaputra yady etad dvir astraṃ na prayujyate ||
anyair gurughnā vadhyantām astrair astravidāṃ vara ||
tvayi hy astrāṇi divyāni yathā syus tryambake tathā ||
icchato na hi te mucyet kruddhasyāpi puraṃdaraḥ ||
'Son of the Acharya, if this weapon cannot be used twice, then let the slayers of the guru be killed by other weapons, O best of weapon-masters. For you have divine weapons, as Tryambaka [Shiva] has; from you, willing and enraged, not even Purandara [Indra] would escape.'

Duryodhana, undeterred, turns his mind to other weapons: if not the astra, then some other might will strike down the slayers of the guru. It is telling that he compares Ashvatthaman to Shiva -- flattery meant to fan his rage. The verse teaches that an insatiable thirst for vengeance seeks ever new paths when one is closed off; and one who incites an avenger with praise of his power fans a fire that threatens to consume everyone -- for enmity, failing to find one weapon, reaches for another.
