स पौरवं रथशक्त्या निहत्य; छित्त्वा रथं तिलशश् चापि बाणैः ॥
छित्त्वास्य बाहू वरचन्दनाक्तौ; भल्लेन कायाच् छिर उच्चकर्त ॥
युवानम् इन्दीवरदामवर्णं; चेदिप्रियं युवराजं प्रहस्य ॥
बाणैस् त्वरावाञ् ज्वलिताग्निकल्पैर्; विद्ध्वा प्रादान् मृत्यवे साश्वसूतम् ॥
sa pauravaṃ rathaśaktyā nihatya; chittvā rathaṃ tilaśaś cāpi bāṇaiḥ ||
chittvāsya bāhū varacandanāktau; bhallena kāyāc chira uccakarta ||
yuvānam indīvaradāmavarṇaṃ; cedipriyaṃ yuvarājaṃ prahasya ||
bāṇais tvarāvāñ jvalitāgnikalpair; viddhvā prādān mṛtyave sāśvasūtam ||
He, having struck down the Paurava with his chariot-spear, having cut his chariot to pieces also with arrows, having severed his arms, anointed with fine sandal, struck off his head from his body with a bhalla-arrow. The youth of the hue of a garland of blue lotuses, the beloved of Chedi, the crown prince, laughing, with arrows swift as blazing fire, piercing him, he gave over to death together with his horses and charioteer.

Ashvatthaman slays the Paurava and the young crown prince of Chedi "of the hue of blue lotuses" -- and does so "laughing." The bitter contrast is telling: blooming youth perishes under a warrior's laughter, blinded by vengeance. The verse teaches that fury which oversteps its measure loses compassion even for the young and beautiful; and laughter over the death of a flowering youth is a sign of how deeply grief has warped the avenger's heart.
