द्रुमाणां शिखराणीव दावदग्धानि मारिष ॥
अश्ववृन्दान्य् अदृश्यन्त रथवृन्दानि चाभिभो ॥
अपतन्त रथौघाश् च तत्र तत्र सहस्रशः ॥
तत् सैन्यं भगवान् अग्निर् ददाह युधि भारत ॥
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि संवर्तक इवानलः ॥
drumāṇāṃ śikharāṇīva dāvadagdhāni māriṣa ||
aśvavṛndāny adṛśyanta rathavṛndāni cābhibho ||
apatanta rathaughāś ca tatra tatra sahasraśaḥ ||
tat sainyaṃ bhagavān agnir dadāha yudhi bhārata ||
yugānte sarvabhūtāni saṃvartaka ivānalaḥ ||
Like the crowns of trees burned by a wildfire, O venerable one, the herds of horses and multitudes of chariots appeared; and streams of chariots fell here and there by the thousands. That army the blessed Agni burned in battle, O Bharata, as the fire of dissolution [samvartaka] consumes all beings at the end of the age.

The army perishes as the world perishes in the fire of dissolution: the image raises a particular slaughter to the scale of universal dissolution. It is telling that the destroyer here is named "the blessed Agni" -- the very element of fire, honored in sacrifice, turned into an instrument of ruin. The verse teaches that what in its proper order serves the good -- the fire of the sacrificial altar -- once it exceeds its measure becomes samvartaka, devouring all; and the boundary between the sacred and the destructive runs through measure and purpose.
