"You, wise as a god, having known that the world consists of Bhava [Shiva], subdued yourself by vows, desiring to win his favor. Having fashioned a new and auspicious image, the image of the great Purusha, you worshipped him with japa, with homas, and with offerings, O bestower of honor. He, thus honored by you, the ancient god, rejoiced, and gave you abundant boons, O knowing one, dwelling [desired] in your heart. Birth, action, austerity, and yoga are abundant in those two [Nara-Narayana] and in you; by those two the god is worshipped in the linga, by you in the image [arca], from age to age."

Vyasa reveals a deep truth: even Nara-Narayana worship Rudra in the linga, and Ashvatthaman worships him in an image. It is notable that even the highest ones worship: reverence for God does not demean but binds together the tiers of the divine. The verse teaches that worship is the very order of being, in which even the greatest honor one another; and the rite performed from age to age is not the worshipper's need but a pattern he shows forth, teaching the world the path of devotion.
