Worth noting how this stair is built, for its construction is exact and worth stating. First rung (1.18): a man of evil conduct, but calling the name — sālokya. Second (1.21): the dying, to whom the name was spoken into the ear — sālokya and sārūpya.
Third (here): a man of good conduct and undivided mind — sāmīpya is added. Fourth (1.24): one contemplating by the path shown by a teacher — sāyujya is added. That is, the stages accumulate: each next one does not cancel the previous but is added to it; and the book repeats the whole series every time.
This construction, I think, is the best made on this subject, and here is why. It does not reject the lower: one living evilly is not sent away, but given the first. And it does not equalize: good conduct adds, and is not found superfluous.
Add the word ananya-dhī, «undivided in mind», literally «having no other in thought». This word is constant in the Gītā: ananya-cetāḥ satatam, «continually, thinking of nothing else» (8.14); and there it is promised that for such a one he is su-labhaḥ, «easily attained». That is, the third rung here is exactly the Gītā's ananya; and its promise is closeness.
