Here is the last rung of the ladder, and worth noting is what it is called: mayi tvaṃ bhava, «be you in Me». The ladder has run thus. Abandon the habits toward things (2.69).
Take up good habits — friendliness and the rest (2.69). Abandon these too, but act by them (2.70). Abandon even the habit of consciousness alone (2.71).
And be — in Me. That is, the last rung is named not as emptiness and not as a state, but as a place beside someone; and, moreover, in the locative case: mayi, «in Me». This detail, I think, is the main point of the whole second chapter, and it is worth saying plainly.
This chapter was entirely about work with oneself: about habits, about breath, about the destruction of the mind; and now, on the last step, when even «consciousness alone» has been abandoned, it is said not «remain yourself», but «be in Me». It was noted at Varāha (4.28) that the reworking of a Gītā verse — mayi instead of ātmani — not only changed the meaning but corrected the grammar, for «to be content» requires two. Here the same: one can be in someone, and the locative case requires a vessel distinct from what it holds.
And add: the very chapter taken from another's work ends with a word that could not have stood in that other work.
