[Bhrigu begot] Chyavana, a man of blazing austerity, righteous and wise, who in wrath burst forth from his mother's womb for her deliverance, O Bharata. The daughter of Manu, Arushi, was the wife of that sage; from her, having pierced her thigh, was born the most glorious Aurva, a great ascetic, mighty in splendor, endowed even as a child with every virtue. His son was Richika, and from him was born Jamadagni; and Jamadagni, great in spirit, had four sons. The youngest of them was Rama (Parashurama), endowed with virtues by no means inferior, skilled in every weapon, the destroyer of kshatriyas, master of himself. Aurva had a hundred sons headed by Jamadagni; and they in turn had thousands of sons — such was the spreading of the line of Bhrigu. Brahma had two other sons, whose sign still stands in the world — Dhatri and Vidhatri, who dwell together with Manu. The sister of those two is the goddess Lakshmi, who dwells in the lotus, the auspicious one; the sons born of her mind are horses that course through the sky. The eldest wife of Varuna was born of Shukra, a goddess; know that her sons are Bala (Strength) and Sura (the goddess of wine), the delight of the gods.
